In Spring of 2018, the Town received notice of a grant to engineer and design the Mills River Valley Trail. The Mills River Valley Trail is a planned multi-use trail for biking, running, and walking that will run parallel to NC 280 from the northern Town limits at the French Broad River to the intersection of NC 191 South (Haywood Road). It will be approximately 3 miles and will tie into a multi-use trail planned for the NCDOT’s NC 191 widening project.
Engineering and design work for the Mills River Valley Trail is expected to begin in 2019. Conserving Carolina is actively raising money for the 20% match required for engineering and design. After engineering and design are complete, the Town expects to construct the trail in phases as the Town budget allows with an emphasis on applying for grant funds to help offset the cost.
